Breaking A Record vs Broken Record

Breaking records is pretty cool.  In 1974, Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record.  In 1995, Cal Ripkin broke Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played.  In 2017, Tom Brady broke the record for most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback by winning his 5th.  Companies break records for sales and customer satisfaction and expansion.  Medical research breaks records for disease cures and rehabilitation triumphs.  However, breaking records is very different from sounding like a broken record, and that’s what we’re dealing with in America today.

The phrase “You sound like a broken record” originated in the days of vinyl records, years ago.  If there was a scratch or some other kind of mark on the record, the needle would stick at that point and keep playing the same spot over and over and over again.  So, sounding like a broken record means you keep saying the same thing over and over again, like the record that skips and keeps repeating the same thing.

What does that have to do with America today?  For the answer, turn on your TV to network news shows, or most cable TV news and opinion shows, or Hollywood awards shows – such as the Emmys this week, or late night television “entertainment” shows, or watch the speeches made by Democrats/progressives/liberals.  It’s quite clear and it is non-stop:

Did you vote for Donald Trump?  You’re a racist.  Do you think people should immigrate to this country legally?  You’re a racist.  Do you speak out about the violence and murders that are occurring in Chicago day after day, year after year?  You’re a racist.  Do you want people trying to come into this country from terror-supporting nations to be vetted?  You’re a racist.  Do you support the police officers in your city?  You’re a racist.  Do you want tax cuts and tax reform for everyone?  You hate the poor, only want to give breaks to the rich and you’re a racist.  Do you want Obamacare repealed and replaced?  You hate the poor, want to destroy health care in this country, want people to die and you’re a racist.  Do you want to fix the welfare system, train people to be successful, support themselves and get them back to work?  You hate the poor and you’re a racist.  Do you think that all children should have the chance to attend schools where they will actually be educated, will learn true American and world history, and be able to think for themselves when they graduate?  You’re against unions and you’re a racist.  I could list many more examples….but then I’d sound like a broken record.

Votes are going to be coming up soon in the House and Senate again regarding the Obamacare disaster, tax cuts and reform, government spending and the debt ceiling and the national debt, to name a few.  Listen carefully to the arguments made regarding these issues and watch just how these issues are covered in the media at large.  Check out the broken record list above and see how often you hear the same thing, the same words, the same phrases, the same accusations over and over and over again.

The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States was actually record breaking….the American citizens broke the VERY long-standing record of electing a career politician to the presidency.  We went back to citizen government again.  That was a pretty significant message to Washington, DC.  So, I would ask:  How about the DC swamp politicians changing their behavior of self-interest and preservation of power to a behavior of advocating for and voting for legislation that unleashes the power of the American people to succeed?  How about breaking the years-long record of obstruction and stalemates in the House and the Senate and start passing legislation for the good of the American people?  How about putting America first once again?  Don’t you all think it’s time we stop sounding like a broken record and start breaking records as a country once again?  I sure do.
